press : new vision recordings - nv9902 - rareform vs spirit - spinechilla

review of new vision recordings - nv9902 - insync magazine august 1999 :

this is double a-side with the original on one side and spirit's simplified version on the other. he chills it out into a simple funky breakbeat pattern over some typical d+b 'atmosphere' sounds (ie. sci-fi moody stuff) and a delayed bass-line.

i prefer the original which pulls no punches after an acidy intro, and blasts you with big fat rolling beats and one of those bass-lines that sounds a bit like a mutant duck being forced to do things it doesn't enjoy much. i can see this being massive on the dance-floor.

review of new vision recordings - nv9902 - 7 ( mix mag update ) august 1999 :

currently getting a right old hammering from goldie, fabio, and the total science boys, 'spinechilla' is a realy cool lick. slighlty dirtier than new vision's last release, spirit holds his corner well with a damn fine interpretation of rareform's original mix.

make sure you check for this hard-hitting journey in the future.

review of new vision recordings - nv9902 - the dnb oracle web site :

woah! hold tight selector, hold tight! where did this little gem come from? right from the off this one is just pure quality. squigy synth riffs join up with metalheadz style cymbols to form to form the perfect intro.

the resulting breakdown is a refreshing break from the norm and when the tune does kick in, fucking hell do you know it! there are unbelievably tight drums, a brilliantly raw bassline and a kick that'll pound your heart.

the breaks roll, flow and evolve like never before and the whole tune is just brimming with momentum. an almost angelic organ comes in and blends in seamlessly. the tune just twists, turns and fights its way forward with commanding authority.

it even has the cheek to just stop point blank before a masterfully executed pulls you back into the myre. the track switches between its highly successful elements with grace and liquidity and the way the drums are chopped and spliced is just heaven.

the biggest shock with this one is that it is only rareform's 2nd release! definitely keep an eye out for these two because they are gonna go far, just remember where you heard of them first.

10/10

review of new vision recordings - nv9902 - atmosphere magazine oct 1999 :

rareforms original mix of "spinechilla" delivers some real cold-hearted business. earbending breaks, sharp pads and some old hardcore samples are all used with shattering effects.

rareform have once again delivered us another track that changes your thoughts on the usual drum & bass sound that we're usualy associated with.

spirit takes "spinechilla" and moves it into a totaly new direction. layering sharp stabs and swirling atmospherics, that roll around the most sinister of basslines - listen to this with the lights on.

review of new vision recordings - nv9902 - knowledge magazine nov 1999 :

a sinister acid fuelled intro grabs your attention, then the sudden drop closely followed by the hardest of breaks and twisted basslines grabs you by the scruff of the neck and shakes the fuck out of you. an interesting take on a familiar formula.

spirit takes things futuristic on the flip with the relick, shuffly chopped-upbeats, and bass stabs and brooding atmospherics hook you into its deceptively funky rhythm.

review of new vision recordings - nv9902 - knowledge magazine dec 1999 :

rareform does an a+ job for the first mix of "spinechilla". aptly titled, the foreboding intro will leave you spooked 'till the real beats kick in.

sinister analogue (a la '97 style) groans in as tech drums intermingle with some fierce amens. nice!

the spirit mix is on the floaty tip... plenty of effects, but the minimal tech beat doesn't go very far.
